January 27th News

It was great to see so many of you at the Open House this week.  Whether it happened at home or at school, I know the children enjoyed sharing their work.  They glowed after hearing and reading your acknowledgement of their hard work and growth.
The children had a very successful week with their Word Sorts.  Many of them told me that they are also practicing at home.  They were able to show off their fluency when we played “Beat The Teacher” at the end of reading time.  It was obvious that I had not been practicing, because they all sorted faster than me.  A new set of words will be coming home next week.
Today we read a book about Ben Franklin and a math game called magic squares.  Have your child show you the magic square activity we did in class, and maybe try some at home.

We will begin a few new activities next week:
Life Books – These are a special, journal type book that will be for children to record special events and memories.  They will be different than our daily journals, because in our Life Books we will record only real stories and memories from our lives.  The stories can be something recent, like “the ferry ride I took to Seattle when I went to the dentist. “  We might also pull from older stories that we remember, like “the time I went to my Aunt’s house last summer”.  Another way that these books can be made more special is that we can bring in mementos and photographs to help tell the story.  These items could include the ferry ticket, the sticker from the dentist, a picture of my aunt, or the children’s menu from where I ate lunch...  Here is a way to scrapbook some of those treasures that children collect (or is that just my children?) and inspire our writing.  The children will write once a week.  They don’t need to bring something in to scrapbook, but they will all be telling their own stories in a special way.
Air and Weather Science – This is an interesting and fun unit in which we will explore air pressure and movement, and how those factors impact weather.  We will have lots of opportunities for hands-on exploring, as well as discussing and recording our observations.
Penguins – This is one of our big, integrated math units, where we will focus on measuring, weighing, and comparing as we also learn about penguins and Antarctica.  We will be experiencing it as if we were taking a trip to Antarctica, including planning, “packing”, and observing as if we were researchers.  The trip to Antarctica is long, and we will visit a few continents along the way, and find penguins there as well.  Expect your child to be very excited about all things penguin for a while.  We have also had a few occasions in which children became so immersed that they thought we were really going on a field trip to Antarctica, so be prepared to clarify if needed.

January 13th News

This week we have:
  • Shared, named, and displayed snow character projects.
  • Listened to and discussed more grandparent letters as they have been coming in to class.  We like to look on the map to find out where the letters have come from, and where our grandparents grew up.  We also enjoy making connections to our own experiences and books we have read.  We have found some traditions that have lasted through the generations, and some that are very different.
  • Looked at time lines, sequenced dates, and learned about copyright dates in some of our favorite books.  This should get the children ready to create their own time lines.  If you didn’t see the time line project that came home last week, please check with your child or check with me.  I have a few extra copies.
  • Read about African American history and Martin Luther King Jr., and wrote our own dreams for a better world.
  • Reviewed clock features and telling time.  Check out the telling time game on bitesizegames.com for more practice.
  • Stretched our “mental math” skills by listening for clue words in story problems.
  • Enjoyed our experience at the children’s theater, and told about our favorite part of the play through writing and 3-D art.
  • Explored vocabulary ideas by creating words that look like their meaning.  Have your children show you the word pictures they created, and then try some more at home!
 Other stuff:
Thank you for the snacks.
Thank you to the volunteers who helped us at the Children’s Theater.  We have been singing about Toad and his bathing suit ever since Tuesday!

January 6th News

In math we are beginning a unit in which we will focus on measurement, telling time, and identifying and using coins.  You can support this unit at home by pointing out how we use these skills in everyday life, and giving your child a chance to practice skills such as measuring in inches, comparing a digital and analog clock, and identifying and adding coins.
Coming home today is a social studies homework project for you to work on with your child for the next few weeks.  We are learning about timelines in class.  This will be an opportunity for your child to create a timeline of his/her own life.  The materials and directions are coming home in a Ziploc bag.  Your child may use photographs or drawings.  Feel free to help your child with the writing portions of the project. When your child has completed their timeline, have them bring it back to share with the class.
This week we began our new word study activity: Word Sorts.  We will be working with a set of words for the week, looking for patterns, and practicing the words in a variety of ways.  This will help the kids familiarize themselves with word patterns for both reading and writing accuracy.  In a few weeks, after we have learned the Word Sort routine at school, I will send home copies of the words for at home practice as well.
We are beginning to run out of snack, and will be needing more soon.  Thanks!

Can You Solve Our Story Problems?

December 9th News

Our math focus this week has been on reading, writing, sequencing, grouping, comparing, and learning about number ranges in the bigger numbers to 100 and beyond.  A few things I have noticed that we will need to focus on more include ship counting by 2’s and counting backwards from those bigger numbers.  We are practicing as we line up, or any time we have a little bit of a wait.  Practice at home would be great as well.
Ms. Pratt, one of our school counselors, has been coming into our class to talk about social thinking strategies.  Be sure to ask your child about Super Flex and the Unthinkables.  The children are really enjoying the stories, and are learning great strategies for how to recognize and solve daily difficulties.
Thanks to the PTO, we enjoyed a Taiko Drumming Assembly this week.  Don’t be surprised if you have some drumming happening at home this weekend.  It was impressive.
Jen, Zephyr’s mom, has a special art project planned for us on Wednesday at 1:30, and we are looking for a few volunteers to help with both the project and clean up at the end of the day.  If you are interested, please let me know.  Also, we have about half of the jars we need, so keep those small jam jars coming.  Thanks!
Next Friday in the afternoon we will be enjoying a “Snuggle In” day with popcorn, juice, movie, and a few winter craft activities.  The children may wear pajamas on that day.  If your child chooses to wear pajamas, please be sure that they are still wearing appropriate footwear for recess.
Next Friday is also library day.  We are going to try to use the Lifeskills of responsibility and organization and see if we can ALL bring back ALL of our library books.  That way we can all have new books to read over  Winter Break.
Our specialist schedule for next week is:
Monday            P.E.
Tuesday            Music
Wednesday      Art
Thursday          P.E.
Friday             Library
I know that I sometimes forget to put the specialist schedule in the newsletter.  If that ever happens , you can also find the specialist schedule on the Blakely website under the Calendars section.  Just look for the Specialist Rotation Calendar.  http://www.bainbridge.wednet.edu/blakely/specialistschedule.pdf
Our rotation this quarter is:
Day 1               P.E.
Day 2               Library
Day 3               Art
Day 4               P.E.
Day 5               Music
Day 6               Art
